The image side of this Rune shows pennant shaped flageas wavinf in the breeze. This was a form of silent communication across great distances, especially at sea. The flag symbol reminds us that good communication is important, and possible, even when it seems there might be a great divide.

The Symbol side of this piece shows the Ansuz rune whose T literal translation is “mouth” or “speech” and is linked to the Norse god Odin. As such, this rune represents the notion of a divine force of creative expression. It  is associated with clarity of mind, divine inspiration, and communication. Ansuz shows us the power of language, as represented in knowledge passed down from generation to generation through the spoken word. This rune represents both spiritual and worldly power, clarification and truth. The rune symbol resembles signal pennants, which served for communication over long distances.

Ansuz belongs to the First Aett, which represents the cycle of life. These are the core aspects of human existence, and the necessary phases that each of us must experience during our journey through this life. These aspects of life can be taken literally, or they can be understood metaphorically to represent current forces and events. Ansuz fits this aett since human cultures are built on communication, which allows us to form communities, work together, and share information and knowledge.

The Norse Rune or "letter" featured on one side of my Runes is taken from a writing system called Elder Futhark. There are many explanations of this Norse writing system in both classical and popular literature. The image side of every Rune represents emotional attributes of its Nordic letter and are pictograms of my own creation. Each Rune description includes an etymological reference of historical origins well as modern meanings.

There are a total of 24 Elder Futhark Runes. They can be divided into three groups of 8 runes each. Each group of 8 is called an “aett” which has an several underlying meanings that can be shared by all 8 runes within it. The additional insight from the Aett formation can help clarify individual rune interpretations.

These beautiful, handmade Rune Charms are heavyweight, with deep carvings on both sides of the Rune. Each Rune comes with a jump ring large enough to thread on a chain.  The one shown is the  2.2mm Square Cable Chain.

Runes are solid Sterling Silver and measure approximately 5/8" high x 7/16" wide x 3/32" deep.
