The image side of this Rune shows a tall gate, with glimpses of land on every side. This is a reminder that no matter the choices you must face when moving forward, it is important to observe what surrounds an action or a decision, so that once you move through to the other side, you have considered your possibilities with clear vision.
The Symbol side of this piece shows the Thurisaz rune, which carries the “th” sound. It’s roots come from the word “thorn”. Many interpretations link this rune with “ice giants” and the destructive forces of nature Another possible interpretation is Thurisaz as a gateway, a place to develop the ability to pause as you seek to understand yourself. Visualize a gateway on a hilltop. The vista stretches out in either direction. Pause to contemplate all the forces which focused on this moment. Movement through the Gateway can symbolize letting go , and moving forward.
Thurisaz belongs to the first aett of the Elder Futhark, which represents the core aspects of human existence, and the necessary phases that each of us must experience during our journey through this life. These aspects of life can be taken literally, or they can be understood metaphorically to represent current forces and events.
The Norse Rune or "letter" featured on one side of my Runes is taken from a writing system called Elder Futhark. There are many explanations of this Norse writing system in both classical and popular literature. The image side of every Rune represents emotional attributes of its Nordic letter and are pictograms of my own creation. Each Rune description includes an etymological reference of historical origins well as modern meanings.
There are a total of 24 Elder Futhark Runes. They can be divided into three groups of 8 runes each. Each group of 8 is called an “aett” which has an several underlying meanings that can be shared by all 8 runes within it. The additional insight from the Aett formation can help clarify individual rune interpretations.
