The image side of this piece shows a spray of energy rising up from two hill shapes. This active and vital design symbolizes the freshness of a new day. It can also represent the effort needed to break through an existing state to a new mode of being.
The Symbol side of this piece shows the Dagaz rune, which in Old Norse translates to ‘day’, symbolizing dawn or a new beginning. This Rune can be thought of as the light of knowledge dispelling the darkness of ignorance. The image of two triangles touching at their points symbolizes the balance between opposites, like night and day or darkness and light. The image is almost like rays of light as the sun rises or sets between mountains. This combination of equal and opposite elements represents enlightenment, awareness, and the awakening of one’s true self.
Dagaz belongs to the third Aett of the Elder Futhark, which carries themes of balance, order, and right action. These runes indicate internal energies and resources that we can utilize to combat external forces acting upon us. The intention of new beginnings, or the rising Dawn fits the concept of this Aett perfectly.
The Norse Rune or "letter" featured on one side of my Runes is taken from a writing system called Elder Futhark. There are many explanations of this Norse writing system in both classical and popular literature. The image side of every Rune represents emotional attributes of its Nordic letter and are pictograms of my own creation. Each Rune description includes an etymological reference of historical origins well as modern meanings.
There are a total of 24 Elder Futhark Runes. They can be divided into three groups of 8 runes each. Each group of 8 is called an “aett” which has an several underlying meanings that can be shared by all 8 runes within it. The additional insight from the Aett formation can help clarify individual rune interpretations.
