The Old Norse interpretation of Laguz, called Lögr, translates to “water” or “waterfall”. In Old English, it was known as Lagu, symbolizing the “ocean” or “sea”. This rune, like a river, has flowed through time, its essence remaining unchanged, its symbolism as vital as the life-giving waters it represents.
Water is not just a physical element. It is also a symbol of the ebb and flow of life, the cycles of birth, death, and rebirth. The Laguz rune, with its connection to water, embodies this understanding of life as a constant flow of change. Water can attain many states of matter, from a gas, as mist or cloud, to its more familiar liquid form, and then to a solid state, as ice. This ability means that idea of Flow is transformative, and may bring you the option to change you current state without changing your essence.
Laguz belongs to the third Aett of the Elder Futhark, which carries themes of balance, order, and right action. These runes indicate internal energies and resources that we can utilize to combat external forces acting upon us. They represent everything from our resolve in action to personal creativity. Laguz, with its associations of flow and change, adds a dynamic element to this aett, reminding us that life, like water, is a constant flow of change within the framework of cosmic law.
The Norse Rune or "letter" featured on one side of my Runes is taken from a writing system called Elder Futhark. There are many explanations of this Norse writing system in both classical and popular literature. The image side of every Rune represents emotional attributes of its Nordic letter and are pictograms of my own creation. Each Rune description includes an etymological reference of historical origins well as modern meanings.
There are a total of 24 Elder Futhark Runes. They can be divided into three groups of 8 runes each. Each group of 8 is called an “aett” which has an several underlying meanings that can be shared by all 8 runes within it. The additional insight from the Aett formation can help clarify individual rune interpretations.
