The image side of this Rune shows a series of bars and lines that create a sense of place. On both the top and bottom of the image there are extra lines which create boundaries, while inside this there are a set of three joined shapes. This represent shared space which is protected by clear boundaries.
The Symbol side of this piece shows the Othala rune, which is derived from the Proto-Germanic word “ōþalan,” which means “heritage” or “inheritance.” Othala represents ancient clan lands and our deep spiritual connection to our ancestral locations, which were often family or clan property. This rune symbolizes home, community, identity, and the physical and spiritual legacy of past and present generations.
Othala reflects both responsibility and pride, linking our history with our future, and reminding us of the importance of honoring our spiritual heritage. This rune can remind us to recognize and embrace the values and resources that have been passed down through generations. It can be especially rewarding to align your personal values with the deep roots of those whom you revere.
Othala belongs to the third Aett of the Elder Futhark, which carries themes of balance, order, and right action. These runes indicate internal energies and resources that we can utilize to combat external forces acting upon us.. Othala fits perfectly within this aett as part of a strong connection to your lineage and the values that have shaped your identity.
The Norse Rune or "letter" featured on one side of my Runes is taken from a writing system called Elder Futhark. There are many explanations of this Norse writing system in both classical and popular literature. The image side of every Rune represents emotional attributes of its Nordic letter and are pictograms of my own creation. Each Rune description includes an etymological reference of historical origins well as modern meanings.
There are a total of 24 Elder Futhark Runes. They can be divided into three groups of 8 runes each. Each group of 8 is called an “aett” which has an several underlying meanings that can be shared by all 8 runes within it. The additional insight from the Aett formation can help clarify individual rune interpretations.
