The image side of this Rune shows bars running in parallel next to and on top of each other, forming a small square in the center. The symbolism brings action to a standstill, creating space for you to pause, however briefly, to consider what lies ahead.
The Symbol side of this piece shows the rune Isa, which comes from the Old Norse word for “ice”, and is associated with winter, cold, and stillness. The Isa rune is often used as a symbol of strength, endurance, and determination in the face of adversity. It represents a period of waiting or a time for introspection.
Isa is the rune of holding together, solidification, silence and reflection, as well as self-control and self-preservation. The powers of ice are directed towards concentrated focus, clear thoughts and calmness. Isa is linked to potential and transformation, since ice can melt into water or vaporize into mist. As ice, Isa represents the time of winter when the stillness of everything allows reflection on what has passed and what is to come. In this way, introspection will give you access to information without the effort of “doing”. One can simply be, and find clarity and the ability to focus needed to light the existing darkness.
Isa belongs to the second aett of the Elder Futhark, represents external forces, or forces in the world which act upon you. These can be both beneficial forces and negative forces. Runes in this aett have the potential to assist you with directing some of these external forces to bring a positivity outcome. This aett carries themes of resistance, survival, and the cyclical nature of life. Isa’s place in this aett is reminding us that even in the harshest winter, there is a promise of spring.
The Norse Rune or "letter" featured on one side of my Runes is taken from a writing system called Elder Futhark. There are many explanations of this Norse writing system in both classical and popular literature. The image side of every Rune represents emotional attributes of its Nordic letter and are pictograms of my own creation. Each Rune description includes an etymological reference of historical origins well as modern meanings.
There are a total of 24 Elder Futhark Runes. They can be divided into three groups of 8 runes each. Each group of 8 is called an “aett” which has an several underlying meanings that can be shared by all 8 runes within it. The additional insight from the Aett formation can help clarify individual rune interpretations.
