In the Proto-Germanic language, Nauthiz represented the sound “n,” as in “need.” This rune is traditionally associated with need, hardship, and constraint. It represents the challenges and necessities of life, reminding us that personal difficulties can be a catalyst for growth and transformation. The rune is also linked to resilience and the human capacity to overcome challenging times. It is a reminder of the strength and determination that lie within us, even in the face of adversity and that even the darkest times can lead to new growth and understanding.
Nauthiz belongs to the second Aett of the Elder Futhark, and represents external forces which act upon you. These can be both beneficial forces and negative forces. Runes in this aett have the potential to assist you with directing some of these external forces to bring a positivity outcome. This aett carries themes of resistance, survival, and the cyclical nature of life. As part of this aett the Nauthiz rune is a reminder strength and wisdom that we gain from overcoming those struggles.
The Norse Rune or "letter" featured on one side of my Runes is taken from a writing system called Elder Futhark. There are many explanations of this Norse writing system in both classical and popular literature. The image side of every Rune represents emotional attributes of its Nordic letter and are pictograms of my own creation. Each Rune description includes an etymological reference of historical origins well as modern meanings.
There are a total of 24 Elder Futhark Runes. They can be divided into three groups of 8 runes each. Each group of 8 is called an “aett” which has an several underlying meanings that can be shared by all 8 runes within it. The additional insight from the Aett formation can help clarify individual rune interpretations.
